Right-wing Republican types just can't get enough of hammering Obama and the Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano over the Christmas Day bombing attempt. For some reason, though, there hasn't been any criticism of the Transportation Security Administration. You know them better as the TSA; they're the agency who is actually responsible for making sure people don't bring things like bombs onto planes.
You'd think that the first person to criticize over this affair would be the person in charge of running the TSA. But for some reason, that person is not being blamed. The Washington Post found out why:
An alleged attempt to blow up a transatlantic flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas would be all-consuming for the administrator of the Transportation Security Administration -- if there were one.
Instead, the post remains vacant because Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) has held up President Obama's nominee in an effort to prevent TSA workers from joining a labor union.Yep. Republican Sen. Jim DeMint has blocked the confirmation of Errol Southers, a highly respected expert in transportation security and counter-terrorism, because he's worried that Southers might allow TSA workers to join a union.
I think this is the charitable view. Consider this statement DeMint made back in July to Politico, concerning health care reform:
"If we're able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him."There is no doubt that crushing Barack Obama's presidency is a priority for DeMint. Is it so far fetched, then, to suggest that he would intentionally block Obama's nominees in the hope that something bad would happen to the country? Something so bad that it would become Obama's Waterloo?
Ensuring that the TSA is a leaderless organization could be just the ticket.
